The most famous legend gives Ukhimath its name. The story is about the demon king Banasur, his beautiful daughter Princess Usha, and Lord Krishna’s grandson, Aniruddha.
Princess Usha once saw a handsome prince in her dreams and fell deeply in love with him. Her best friend, Chitralekha, who had magical powers, drew a portrait of the prince based on Usha’s description and identified him as Aniruddha from Dwarka. Using her powers, Chitralekha secretly brought Aniruddha to Ukhimath, where he and Usha got married in secret.
When King Banasur found out, he was furious. He captured Aniruddha and imprisoned him. This led to a terrible battle between Lord Krishna and his army on one side, and Banasur, who was protected by Lord Shiva, on the other. The battle was so fierce that the entire world was in danger. Finally, Lord Brahma stepped in and made them stop. Banasur realized his mistake and happily agreed to the wedding of Usha and Aniruddha.
This sacred place, where their wedding took place, was originally named ‘Ushamath’ in honor of the princess. Over time, the name changed to Ukhimath. The word ‘math’ means a dwelling or abode.

The main spiritual center of the town is the ancient Ukhimath Omkareshwar Temple.
